The ‘sacrifice trap’ is a term coined by peace researcher Kenneth Boulding to describe a situation, often in war (especially used in reference to the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War) in which a decision maker is inhibited from withdrawing from a situation (such as a military campaign) because of the degree to which they have already sacrificed for the cause.
