Youth Leadership–

Offering  a Sense of Achievement and Purpose to Young People

“What’s wrong with the world today is that people don’t have anything to believe in.”

Eknath Easwaran

“Apathy can be overcome by enthusiasm, and enthusiasm can only be aroused by two things:

first, an ideal which takes the imagination by storm, and second, a definite intelligible plan for carrying that ideal into practice.”

Arnold Toynbee

Gandhi considered himself a “practical idealist.” Everyday, the Metta Center receives letters and inquiries from young idealists throughout the world who want to make a positive lasting change in the world, some of whom are facing violence directly.  Our work is to nourish the idealism they bring with the practical applications and logic of nonviolence.  We work to empower those who come through our doors (even our virtual ones) to explore and learn more about nonviolence through support, mentorship and opportunities for selfless-service in our organization. No matter how long they stay with us–be it a week, be it three years– young people who come through the Metta Center always move on to their next stage in life with the deeper of direction, meaning and purpose that comes with nonviolence.

(It should also be noted that Michael Nagler in his long career as an educator worked with tens of thousands of young people over the years at the University of California, Berkeley which is why young people have a special place in Metta’s project outreach! See Michael as a youth leader in the Free Speech Movement below.)

Opportunities for young people at Metta:

  • Interviews and talks
  • Volunteer opportunities and internships
  • Guided study and mentorship in nonviolence
  • Fun challenges (see regular updates)
