January: Week One
Stories We Live By
Don’t listen to this wall…
Readings for this week:
This week invites you to notice the stories shaping how you see yourself, others, and the world. These reflections are not assignments to complete, but invitations to pause, observe, and listen inwardly. There are no right or wrong answers. Write, reflect, or simply sit with what arises.
Noticing the Stories
After reading New Story Creation, take a few moments to reflect:
In your own words, what does the idea of a “New Story” mean to you?
What assumptions about human nature or society does the “Old Story” seem to rely on?
Was there a phrase, image, or idea in the reading that stayed with you? What do you notice about why it landed?
Stories at Work Around Us
After reading Not Just a Billboard, a Story, reflect on how stories operate in daily life:
What does Michael mean by an operational story—a story we live from, often without noticing?
Can you think of a common image, message, or piece of media you encounter that reflects an “Old Story” (for example, fear, separation, domination, or scarcity)?
How do messages like this tend to affect how you think, feel, or relate to others?
Turning Inward
Now, gently turn toward your own experience:
Can you recall a moment in your life when a particular story about yourself, others, or the world shaped how you responded to a situation?
Looking back through the lens of the New Story, what feels different about how you understand that experience now?
What might it look like to respond from a New Story perspective in a similar situation today?
Living the New Story
Over the coming days, simply notice:
Where do you see New Story values—connection, empathy, cooperation, dignity—showing up in everyday life?
How does it feel in your body or inner life when you encounter these moments?
You may wish to jot down one brief example for yourself.
Closing Reflection
If it feels right, complete this sentence:
One story I am becoming more aware of in my own life is…
You are welcome to share from these reflections in our group, or simply to listen. Silence, curiosity, and care are always welcome.
