May: Week 1

In this video, trainer and teacher David Ryan Barcega Castro-Harris, founder of Amplify-RJ, offers a thorough overview of restorative justice. Please watch/listen to this video carefully, and take notes if that helps you remember.

Some questions to consider:

  • What image of the human being is presented?

  • What are some key ideas that stand out to you?

  • For those participants who have studied with us prior to this month, what are the overlaps or connections to other content/ideas we’ve explored?

  • What are some ways of ‘living restoratively’?

  • What questions come up for you?

At the end of his presentation, David shares a poem. It’s called I Am You Or You Are Me / In Lak'ech by Luis Valdez.

You are my other me.
If I do harm to you,
I do harm to myself.
If I love and respect you,
I love and respect myself.

Tú eres mi otro yo.
Si te hago daño a ti,
Me hago daño a mi mismo.
Si te amo y respeto,
Me amo y respeto yo.

Do you live in an intentional community (including a family structure) or culture that upholds restorative justice? Please share!
